Earn an easy 50K American AAdvantage miles

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® has a welcome bonus of 50,000 AAdvantage miles after spending $2,500 within the first three months. The card’s $99 annual fee is even waived for the first 12 months.

I value AAdvantage miles at 1.5 cents each, so to me this bonus is worth $750. That’s not bad, especially for a card with its annual fee waived for the first 12 months. That’s a great way to be able to “try” the card before you have to “buy” it, so to speak.

There are so many great uses for AAdvantage miles on partners, and 50,000 miles will get you on the way to a one-way business class ticket on partner airlines to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, etc.

As far as card eligibility goes, the bonus miles aren’t available to those who have received a new account bonus for this exact card in the past 48 months. Eligibility is unrelated to any other AAdvantage card, whether issued by Citi or Barclays. For example, you’d be eligible for this card even if you already had the American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® (review) or Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (review).

Applied today. Approved instantly for $12.4K credit limit.

  2. TravelFitForAKing Guest

Here's a recent datapoint. I applied today (4/27) with a 804 credit score. They pulled my Experian report. I was instantly approved for $12,000.

  3. Benny Guest

Instantly declined. 800+ credit score, but also have low credit utilization, and two new cards in the last 12 months.

I got the Avaitor MC two months ago and just received the Citi MC with the 75k offer. But what is better than this? I just got an offer offer for 60k AA miles for opening a Citi checking account with a $12 monthly fee (waived) spending $1k on their debit card within 90 days and a ACH deposit of $1k (OMG)!! The ACH can be made by VENMO, Zelle, Direct Deposit....I'm just rolling in...

Like Lucky, I was instantly denied despite having an excellent credit score. I'm also at 3/24 (not a Citi criteria I know) with only a handful of inquiries in the last two years. Apparently Citi doesn't like "low credit utilization" and deems people like me "not profitable". Anyways, I would be cautious about applying unless you don't mind a hard pull and getting denied. I'm done with Citi.

  6. Dave Guest

Why did you get denied? Too many citi cards already? Suspicion of “gaming”? Would be curious to know.

  7. Herbie1946 New Member

Ben- I hope that they did not deny you for having recently obtained one or more credit cards. I discovered that the definition of "recently" includes 17 months (or possibly more).

  8. Ed Guest

Does buying AA gift cards count toward minimum spend?

    1. Duhh Guest

Ed, you're not to smart. ANY spending counts toward minimum spend. Spending is spending

Applied for this sign-up offer, but was instantly denied by Citi. FICO 815+, two new cards opened recently (Amex Green Card 12/7/22) and (Amex Gold 1/6/23). Denial reason was "high amount of unused credit compared to available credit lines" and that I had "recently opened one or more accounts." Called recon and they said that there's nothing they could do as this Aadvantage card is not available for reconsideration for the reasons that they flagged...

Denial reason was "high amount of unused credit compared to available credit lines" and that I had "recently opened one or more accounts." Called recon and they said that there's nothing they could do as this Aadvantage card is not available for reconsideration for the reasons that they flagged me on. I asked her if this was a Citi Bank policy or solely the Aadvantage card policy and she confirmed that it was the latter. Seem like AA may have increased the sign-up offer, but also increased the difficulty to be approved for it. :(

If I applied for the card two months back and have not yet fulfilled the previous spend $2500 in 3 months 50k mile offer, what are my option? Can I request for an upgrade or can I cancel and reapply and still be eligible for the new bonus?

  11. Jim Guest

I don't know if Citi has changed their approvals, but I was denied for having too much unused credit and too many open/closed accounts on my credit report.

    1. FlyerDon Guest

I was told the same thing, too much unused credit. I think I have four or five credit cards, including one from Citi. It’s a mystery.

    2. Tim Guest

I too was denied for too much unused credit and having one or more accounts opened recently. My most recent cards were opened 12/22 and 01/23. They increased the bonus offer, but then made it harder to get approved.

    3. Jim Guest

Maybe it doesn't help that I have the business card already, but I haven't had the personal Citi card in years.

  12. Kevin Guest

Funny how people are whining about how useless AA miles are while still be able to get 5cpp out of a card thats annual fee is waived first year. Opportunity cost and all but you’re trippin if you say you can’t put 75k aa miles in good use. Gosh some people are greedy as hell

  13. JD Guest

Ben, would like to use your link but.... is it just me or does the link to apply for the card NOT WORK?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ JD -- Thanks for the support! Hmmm, are you using desktop or mobile? It's working for me on desktop, not sure if there might be an issue with cookies?

  14. NYGuy24 Diamond

Ben, I am interested in this card since I think I last closed this card five years ago. Do you know how long they will keep the offer open? Will they pull it without notice? I just picked up the IHG and I have to make spend on a second upgrade offer I have so I am trying to space out my spending requirements a bit.

  15. ChadMC Guest

Not huge. Not at all. Considering the junk status that AAdvantage miles have become lately, 75K doesn't get much of anything. It's even a challenge to find a domestic round trip for less than 75K. And forget about anything non-stop. Huge would be something closer to maybe 350,000 miles. Even that won't get a transatlantic trip these days. Right now at least, their miles are practically useless.

    1. Valentin Guest

Used recently approx. 110K miles for 2 tickets one way to Tokyo. Pretty good.

  16. M.G. Guest

Applied. Denied instantly. No idea why. The last Citi AAdvantage card I held was opened in 2016, and closed in 2018.

    1. NYGuy24 Diamond

You have other citi cards (if not maybe it is something with citi and not specific to this card) or recent citi apps/cards (maybe you triggered one of their other disqualifying factors based on that type of thing)?

  17. AF Kay Guest

It would be a good deal if (and only it) AA miles were worth anything. You all be the judge, but I am not sure they are worth much.

  18. D3kingg Guest

I hope there’s no more BS 6 weeks wait to for the miles to post to your account. I’m about to finish spending 4K on Citi Aadvantage Business and need that 60k mile bonus asap. I wanna do $350 co pay plus 25k miles for an upgrade from lax to hnd. Never done that before.

  19. Joseph Story Guest

I feel like this blog is just shilling cards now in the guise of providing "advice".

  20. Julie Guest

This is good but I like the Barclay’s 60k miles and all you have to buy is a pack of gum.

    1. AOH Guest

      50K miles now unfortunately

  21. Bill Guest

Ben, what kind of preferred boarding (which group?). Also does preferred boarding also apply to authorized users of the card or just the primary card holder?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Bill -- Preferred boarding in this case is with group five. This only applies to the primary cardmember, and not to authorized users.

    2. Michael Guest

What about someone traveling with you on the same reservation, say a spouse?

    3. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Michael -- Companions can board with you, that shouldn't be an issue.

    4. DavidW Guest

My wife and I both get preferred boarding even though our AA account and card are under her name.

  22. Jim Guest

Just in time for the dynamic price switch over. That increased sign-up bonus will buy a lot less.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Jim -- Well, as of now there's no change to partner awards, which I'd consider to be the best use of AA miles anyway.

  23. Anthony Diamond

Do you need to cancel a Citi card before getting a sign up bonus again? Annoying I am at 3 years and 10 months on this Citi AA card, so I am probably not eligible for a bonus for at least six months or so. I am still holding the card and was planning to cancel - but wondering if I absolutely have to before applying again. In the same situation with the Citi Premier card...

    1. Andrew (SJC) Guest

Wife literally signed up yesterday for this card with 50k bonus. Is Citi flexible, will they adj the bonus if she meets the new spend req?

    2. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Anthony -- If I'm not mistaken, Citi actually lets you have multiple of the same cards, assuming you otherwise meet the requirements.

  24. Michael Guest

    good morning

how long is a "limited time"? a few days or weeks? can i wait to apply maybe over the weekend?

    Thank you

    1. InternationalTraveler Diamond

@Michael: Usually it is valid for a few weeks at least, so I would not worry too much and apply over the weekend if that is better for you.

    2. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Michael -- There's no published end date. As noted by InternationalTraveler, typically these bonuses are around for at least a few weeks. It's purely speculation on my part, but I think waiting until the weekend should be fine.

  25. Benny Guest

Will you downgrade the card before paying the annual feee?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Benny -- I haven't even applied for the card yet, let alone decided what I'll do 12 months down the road, heh. :-)

  26. Nfd Guest

    Is 48 month restriction enforced?
Will need to figure out when I had this card the last time

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Nfd -- Yes it is. You can call up Citi and they should be able to tell you when you last had this card and received a bonus.
