Details: Marriott Bonvoy & MGM Rewards Partnership

67

In 2023, Marriott and MGM announced plans to launch a partnership. In recent weeks, this has been progressively rolled out. There’s now a major update, as this integration is complete, so you can now book all participating MGM properties through Marriott channels. Let’s cover all the details.

MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy collaboration basics

Marriott and MGM have entered into an exclusive long-term strategic licensing agreement, and the creation of MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy. This encompasses 16 properties and around 40,000 guest rooms across the United States, in Las Vegas and beyond.

Of the 16 MGM properties that are part of the MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, four properties are directly affiliated with existing Marriott collection brands:

On top of that, seven MGM resorts in Las Vegas have joined MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy:

Lastly, five other MGM properties in the United States have joined MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy:

These properties are now all bookable through Marriott channels. As I’ll explain in more detail below, you need to book directly through Marriott in order to earn and redeem points at these properties.

Marriott Bonvoy & MGM Rewards reciprocal perks

A key part of this agreement involves offering reciprocal benefits to the more than 180 million members of Marriott Bonvoy and more than 40 million members of MGM Rewards. This includes reciprocal elite recognition, reciprocal points earning and redemption opportunities, plus points transfers between programs.

Let me note that for Marriott Bonvoy members, you’re only able to earn or redeem points, or take advantage of elite benefits, if you book directly through Marriott. So booking through MGM directly would mean you’re not eligible for any perks or points. This is a major restriction that’s quite disappointing, since in many cases you’ll find cheaper rates directly with MGM.

Let’s start by looking at what elite members in Marriott Bonvoy can expect. I’ll cover the perks for each tier, and note that if a perk has an asterisk next to it, that means the benefit is only available on a promotional basis, through December 31, 2024.

Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite members receive the following at MGM properties:

  • 10% Marriott Bonvoy bonus points on qualifying points

Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite members receive the following at MGM properties:

  • 25% Marriott Bonvoy bonus points on qualifying charges
  • Welcome gift of 500 Marriott Bonvoy points per stay

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members receive the following at MGM properties:

  • 50% Marriott Bonvoy bonus points on qualifying charges
  • Enhanced room upgrades, based upon availability
  • Priority check-in
  • Complimentary 2PM late checkout (subject to availability)*
  • Welcome gift of 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per stay or $15 food & beverage credit per night of stay

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite members receive the following at MGM properties:

  • 75% Marriott Bonvoy bonus points on qualifying charges
  • Enhanced room upgrades, based upon availability
  • Priority check-in
  • Complimentary 2PM late checkout (subject to availability)*
  • Welcome gift of 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per stay or $15 food & beverage credit per night of stay

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite members receive the following at MGM properties:

  • 75% Marriott Bonvoy bonus points on qualifying charges
  • Waived resort fee*
  • One suite upgrade at a Las Vegas Hotel per year, up to three-night stay*
  • Enhanced room upgrades, based upon availability
  • Complimentary 1PM early check-in and 4PM late checkout (subject to availability)*
  • Welcome gift of 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per stay or $15 food & beverage credit per night of stay
  • Complimentary self-parking*
  • Priority access on dining and check-in*
  • 15% retail discounts

Those who are MGM Rewards members are also able to link accounts to receive exclusive benefits at Marriott Bonvoy properties:

  • MGM Rewards Gold members receive Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite
  • MGM Rewards Platinum members receive Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite
  • MGM Rewards Noir members receive Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite

Note that these matches are initially available through December 31, 2024, so it remains to be seen if this will be offered beyond that.

Booking MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy properties

Now that you’re able to book MGM properties through Marriott, let’s take a look at how this works in practice.

The good news is that the standard rate you’ll find on Marriott’s website matches the standard rate you’ll usually find on MGM’s website. The bad news is that MGM almost always has special discounted rates for its own members, offering up to 15% off. Those are just bookable on MGM’s website, and not on Marriott’s website.

In other words, as a savvy consumer, you’ll almost always be paying a premium for booking through Marriott rather than through MGM.

MGM property cash rates on Marriott’s website

When it comes to redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points at MGM properties, definitely manage your expectations. Keep in mind that Marriott doesn’t waive resort or destination fees on free night awards, and that makes up a significant portion of room rates in Las Vegas.

The redemption value isn’t a set amount per point compared to the cash rate, as there is some variability. However, one thing is consistent — the value isn’t very good. It seems that most redemptions are in the range of 0.5-0.7 cents per point, so that’s not exactly a very enticing redemption.

This explains why Hyatt & MGM cut ties

For roughly a decade, World of Hyatt and MGM Rewards had a loyalty collaboration, but that was discontinued as of late 2023.

Clearly MGM dumped Hyatt in favor of Marriott. I assume MGM and Hyatt had a 10-year partnership, and MGM decided that Marriott was a better fit. While World of Hyatt is more rewarding than Marriott Bonvoy (in many ways), there’s no denying that Marriott Bonvoy has a lot more distribution power.

In the meantime, the Rio Las Vegas has joined World of Hyatt, and is undergoing a major renovation. So while it’s nice to have a property fully integrated into Hyatt, this doesn’t quite offer the selection you get with MGM.

Borgata Atlantic City joins MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy

My take on the Marriott & MGM partnership

I’d say there are both pros and cons to this new partnership, in comparison to the one that previously existed with Hyatt. On the plus side:

  • It’s cool that three additional MGM properties in Las Vegas are outright joining Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio, which should offer more perks to travelers; this is better than just a loyalty collaboration
  • Marriott Bonvoy does have a much bigger membership base than World of Hyatt, so a lot more people will likely benefit from this
  • It’s cool that MGM properties outside of Las Vegas are also participating in this partnership, while the Hyatt and MGM collaboration was limited to Las Vegas

Unfortunately the execution of this partnership is sort of abysmal, in comparison to the previous Hyatt partnership:

  • Stays at MGM properties only qualify for Marriott Bonvoy if they’re booked directly through Marriott; rates are almost always lower through MGM, so you can expect that you’re essentially paying a premium to get your Marriott Bonvoy perks
  • There’s no tier matching from Marriott Bonvoy to MGM Rewards, but rather you just directly get select perks; this also means that you don’t get waived resort fees

So the benefits of this are way, way, worse than with World of Hyatt, but it’s still better than nothing.

Beau Rivage Biloxi joins MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy

Bottom line

Marriott and MGM have completed the implementation of their partnership. 16 different MGM properties are now bookable through Marriott channels, and four of those properties are even being integrated into existing Marriott brands, including Luxury Collection, Autograph Collection, and Tribute Portfolio.

This is better than nothing, but ultimately the execution of this collaboration leave quite a bit to be desired, especially in comparison to the previous Hyatt collaboration.

What do you make of the Marriott & MGM collaboration?

Is it confirmed that stays booked through Marriott channels earn Marriott Elite Night Credits? The announcement email today and the website it linked to suspiciously made no mention of stays at MGM hotels counting towards Marriott status

Whichever Marriott exec negotiated this lopsided deal should be fired. Abysmal is an accurate description of the fact that MGM elites get upgraded into BonVoy, further increasing competition for upgrades and Rewards among those of us with earned status, while Marriott elites get NO status in MGM Rewards. This last weekend I stayed at 2 different MGM properties this for a total of 4 nights . I inquired with both the front desk and VIP services at the Mandalay Bay and Vdara about Marriott elite benefits . The front desks were unfamiliar with any of the benefits, but a supervisor at both hotels upon check in explained that they only applied if the reservation was made through Marriott. The VIP service staff were more helpful in that they welcomed me and said that I was free to use the VIP desk as a Marriott Titanium Elite digital membership card, even if i booked though MGM. (The rates through MGM as a rewards member are about 20-25% better, so of course that's where any astute consumer would book! ) I got the distinct impression that they offered VIP service desk to Marriott elites not because it is actually a published benefit (it is not to my knowledge) but to try to assuage the frustrations of BonVoy elites by giving them something, since we otherwise receive NO benefits whatsoever. Even MGM pearl members (it's lowest status) receive free parking at its resorts!

None of this is surprising any more . As a Bonvoy Titanium member, I could recite the same complaints as many others here about how Marriott has decimated the value proposition of its program to the point that elite members like me receive nothing more than crumbs (1000 points) and unmet expectations of room upgrades . Long gone are the rich reward days and excellent customer service of Starwood, having been replaced by money grubbing Marriott that now overcharges for rooms and delivers fewer and fewer paltry benefits! Like others I am seriously looking at Hyatt that provides better hotels and better rewards to it's elites.

Ben, as an Ambassador, I received a package introducing the partnership. Nothing indicated that certain benefits are only through 12/31. Maybe I missed something but it seemed these benefits would be ongoing.

I am confused about the status match. I am Gold Elite with Marriott and Sapphire with MGM. Am I able to get Gold or Platinum status with MGM because of my Gold Elite status with Marriott?

Honestly, The MGM deal with Marriott seems to have so many limitations it's tough to get the benefits of a full relationship.

Would greatly prefer being able to book on MGM and get points and the benefits without the limitations. here, it's just as lame as the Atlantis resort relationship. Anytime there are big events or big travel days... good luck getting Marriott points or the benefits. so, I'll only stay at their properties...

Bonvoy Titanium. Stayed at NYNY checked out yesterday. Nobody knew anything. Didn’t apply F&B credit. Told me to call Marriott. Charged $20 for early check in, which I agreed to. Said no upgrades. Lots of training needed/should have already happened since their signage now includes various Bonvoy references, elite lines, etc.

Should've called it when we first saw that SuperBowl commercial back in 2019. Bonvoy was the beginning of the end.

LV casinos are cutting out status matches (see Caesars changes w Wyndham and Founders Card for example). Right now LV casinos are minting money (over a billion a month in win( and frankly don’t need people matching that aren’t going to gamble so no more free lunch. But what I did not expect was the poor matching and the underwhelming merger. Maybe when Marriott/MGM reads the disappointment with their members they may change their minds.

This partnership is so bad it’s not even worth the bother to think about. One has to be Bonvoy captive to even consider it as MGM rewards rates are very likely to be a lower price and there are nearly no benefits for non-Ambassador Bonvoy elites. While MGM has some decent properties, there are much better on the strip for similar money. I’m actually far less likely to stay at a MGM property now that...

@Ben, Marriott has been sending gifts to Ambassador level members celebrating this new partnership which is kind of funny given that the partnership doesn't do much for Ambassadors after the first year. I arrived home last night and found a package with a leather box with two packs of cards and an oversized die, all with Ambassador branding.

  14. Lee Guest

Ben, in an announcement a few weeks ago, Marriott identified benefits that would be granted to its members at MGM properties on an ongoing basis and others that would only be granted for an initial period. I'm an Ambassador Elite. I just received a promotional gift that introduces the new relationship. It states that *all* of the benefits identified a few weeks ago (for Ambassadors) will be *ongoing*. Including waived resort fees, etc.

When I heard of this merger with marriot, I was very psyched because I have lifetime status with marriot, and routinely have titanium every year. I thought I could continue getting all the same perks that I got from the caesers/hyatt/mgm match and then some with titanium stations.

I will say that I did get to enjoy the benefits of mgm gold through status match from caesors diamond and hyatt for a year while that existed, and the waived resort fees and free rooms were a perk I got to enjoy several times in AC and Vegas. Too bad this ship has sailed. Overall, I think the caesars diamond benefits offered are better than mgm/marriot marriage, so that will still be my goto in the future, and this can be attained fairly easy still.

Bonvoy is a really bad loyalty program and this partnership will just create more confusion and Bonvoyed moments. Count me out forever. Caesar’s Diamond is 100x better. Titanium members will pay resort fees AND parking.

If that strategy doesn't work I will look at alternative properties in Vegas and ways to avoid parking and resort junk fees.

You missed the loss of one key benefit: with MGM/Hyatt you got MGM status. With that status you didn't have to pay resort fees.

“Unfortunately [the execution of] this [partnership] is sort of abysmal . . . .” Remove the words in brackets and it describes what Marriott’s loyalty program has become. Recently got a whopping 1000 points at a St. Regis instead of breakfast as a Titanium because of renovations. Meanwhile Hyatt is consistently (that's key!) showering Globalists with free breakfast and other goodies. In Vegas I’m excited to try Caesar’s palace for the first time this March...

Meanwhile Hyatt is consistently (that's key!) showering Globalists with free breakfast and other goodies. In Vegas I’m excited to try Caesar’s palace for the first time this March given I still can’t get either MGM or Marriott benefits after waiting for 6 months and Caesar’s rates are half of the Bellagio’s. Each brand has great properties and I’m not complaining about individual hotels (the St. Regis was excellent!) but my brand loyalty is definitely shifting to the point where I’d prefer a non-affiliated hotel like Caesar’s over a Marriott affiliated hotel, if the price is right. Loyalty is supposed to allow hotels to charge more because of their affiliation and while in the past Marriott was successful (at least in regards to making me pay more to get the extra nights I needed for status), the value proposition is no longer there. I think in the end MGM may not benefit as much as they thought from this new alliance.

  23. jason d Guest

Only benefit I see is if you're platinum+ and are booking Excalibur/Luxor for the EQN during a promotion. Assuming the current double EQN and 1k points per stay applies, you can get 2 nights, 2k points, and a $15 credit for $80/night at the Excalibur. If you get credit for ghost stays, it may be worth it for $35/night.

    1. AMC Guest

The issue with that is the $37/night resort fee. This partnership is pretty worthless.

  24. rich62az Member

Different topic but quick question. I just signed up for a Life Miles account and would like to transfer miles into it and use them for 2 award tickets. Is that ok or do I need to wait a few weeks or longer before using the account? I thought I read something about accounts getting locked because they may view it as fraud?

    Thanks.

    1. Tacoma Guest

Despite all of the bad news, the only upsides I see are first the ability to use the 35k certificates (plus top off) at new locations. Bellagio for example can price around 38k points off peak. Second the 5k redemption rates on many Excalibur nights are good for a mattress run - at a per night rate of just $35 (plus tax) and 5k points. Some people will find value in some of these in December.

  25. AD Diamond

I wondered what all the asterixes after the Ambassador benefits were... Received the email from Marriott and those represent benefits that are only for the promotional period. So, after that, Ambassadors, like everyone else, get nearly nothing while Noir members get matched to Ambassador. Granted I'm sure they have few Noir members, but it seems like a pretty lopsided arrangement. It wouldn't get me to stay at MGMs more.

  26. Bob Buchan Guest

The current resort fees being charged at both properties should be optional (or tiered) depending on use. Also, they should be outlined at time of booking. The disclaimer “fees and taxes included” should be removed because it is a “resort fee” and is not included.

  27. Dave Guest

Can you use the free night certificates from Marriott cards to book MGM?

  28. KT Guest

This is definitely worse than the Hyatt+MGM partnership for Bonvoy members. Previously as a explorist/globalist, I would be marched to MGM gold. And that alone gave me two biggest benefits at MGM: resort fee waived and complimentary parking (with or without a hotel stay). As most ppl know here, the resort fee runs from $45 to $55 per day upwards at MGM casinos. Now as a LtT Bonvoy member, I won’t get those benefits whatsoever

Just wanted to note that apparently Nomad and Delano are not going to be part of the Marriott program.

    1. chbartel New Member

Well that just sucks. I love the Nomad because it's non smoking and a really great setup. Love bourbon and love the speakeasy feel. Of course, I guess it wouldn't matter anyways. Booked great rates in December for this July but looks like my platinum status with Marriott wouldn't transfer anyways since it was booked with MGM.

    2. Retired Gambler Guest

Rumor is NoMad will be rebranded. Will still be a “hotel within a hotel” but a unique MGM brand instead of partnering w NoMad. Same end result - different name. That is likely why not yet available (but almost certainly will be)

  30. Michael Guest

What happened to hotel Delano? I agree that no reciprocal from Bonvoy to MGM is a miss…did not even get you at least Pearl status so you would get free parking at the hotels…who negotiated this poor deal?

  31. BigG Guest

MGM platinum to Marriott gold? That is a serious mismatch . Noir now but Feb 1 back to platinum so this is bad news. Marriott rates will never match status discounts for mgm plat so only interesting thing is the points transfer but at 30k cap that is zero value . This is turning into a non starter for me pretty quick .

  32. Peter Guest

So are the four properties that are "joining" the existing Marriott brands becoming full fledged Marriotts? Do the watered down perks and limitations on booking direct though MGM only apply to the others?

Since they're creating a new Marriott "MGM Collection" and sating that the other properties are joining that, it doesn't seem clear to me at all that being part of a Marriott collection means you'll be run like a normal Marriott.

  33. Beachfan Guest

Just tge elimination of free self parking is enough to make the deal stink.

  34. Anthony Diamond

One question - what if you book these stays through a corporate travel portal (Concur, Amex), a convention meeting planner site, etc? I.e. neither "directly" through Marriott or MGM? Usually if I am traveling to Vegas for work, I am booking through those channels.

  35. jb17 Member

Hyatt partnership was too good to be true - especially when MGM revamped its rewards program and waived resort fees for gold+. At the time, booking through Hyatt was nearly always significantly more expensive than MGM directly and I suspect that won't change with Marriott. So with the limited perks of booking through Marriott it doesn't seem this will make much sense to utilize.

  36. Greg Guest

A a Titanium on a reward stay, I expect to get 1000 pts, and that is about it.

On a paid stay, if I book through the more expensive Marriott channel, I will get the 1000pts, 75% bonus on eligible charges and qualifying nights. Not sure if those few benefits will be enough to entice me to pay more to book through Marriott.com

Not worth it. The MGM Gold status with Hyatt was perfect. Waived resort fees and free parking were everything. I get sometimes more bonus points with status at a Residence Inn. $15 food credit? That's enough for 1 item like a coffee or a small sandwich.
    Very disappointing
If I'm going to Vegas it makes more sense to stay at a Bonvoy with free breakfast or elite breakfast or lounge than pay 2-3x more without breakfast or parking on The Strip at an MGM.

MGM Mandatory Resort Fee (water NOT included!) - $45 plus tax (per room, per night) = $50

$15 daily food and beverage credit, after mandatory tips, fees and taxes = $9 (enough for one water bottle in Vegas)

    $9-50= -$41 of daily benefits. #bonboyed

Previously Explorist / Globalist match to MGM Gold and enjoy no resort fee, free parking, priority access at dining, and room upgrade, now only Ambassadors receive it. The first two were especially rewarding.
For a reasonable frequent traveller holding Globalist + Titanium but can’t hit Ambassador, it’s a huge devaluation.

So Bellagio is a Luxury Collection brand but you only get $15 credit? How does that make sense? So much inconsistency!!

No reciprocal status from Marriott to MGM, and more than likely higher rates being booked via Marriott. As one who lives in Las Vegas, MGM consistently runs promotions throughout the year. This is a hard pass for me.

Matching to Gold from Hyatt was a sweet spot. Those waived resort fees in Vegas really add up! I was tempted to start moving some nights to Marriot if they were going to offer a similar deal (I did 100+ nights in Hyatts last year). Moving to Ambassador isn't really on the cards, though

The Bellagio should not be part of the Luxury Collection. Sure, the bedding is nice, but the waits at the front desk take forever, the hotel lacks porters for luggage, and every restaurant is a noisy mess. I get that it's Vegas, but the hotel's five start status was almost certainly awarded by SkyTrax.

Right? The rooms are lackluster compared to other options in Vegas...

Very disappointing. If I’m reading correctly, I could only earn Marriott elite night credits at a Vegas property if I book through Marriott?

      @ Brian -- That's correct.

You can earn ENCs on certain rates through MGM but you would need to book through the MGM call center or a MGM travel agent. Website bookings don't qualify

Also curious..no reciprocal mLife status for Bonvoy elites? This was the best part of the partnership with Hyatt, IMO.

    1. Dan Guest

That's pretty clearly why MGM cut ties...

Just to clarify: MGM status will give you Marriott status, but NOT vice versa? (just benefits at the hotels themselves)

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

      @ Willem -- That's correct.

Apparently it doesn’t . Platinum to gold is not equivalent at all as gold is nothing at Marriott. Value in Noir but its invitation only so very high threshold.
